DS124: Bridge tracks

I was asked to play a little longer today to cover for another DJ so the set is around 90 minutes long. I was experimenting with harmonic mixing of different sub-genres. I have always liked the somewhat disturbing contrast mixing them creates. I think one of the secrets to making it pay off is to form relationships between them by having complimentary musical keys.

Linking sub-genres together using 'bridge tracks' that help to ease the pain of transition is a good idea too. There are quite a few to choose from and some DnB artists specialise in these such as Chris SU and Resound; making tunes that defy conventional categorisation and manage to combine different sub-genres seamlessly.

DS122: ithink Spearhead

I was down at Muse in Nottingham on Saturday with my laptop and Traktor and had a really good time. I was on between 11 and half twelve, warming up for the headline act Kubiks and Lomax. Thanks and respect must go to the CULT promotion and DJ team for having the cohones to book a dirty, laptop-using, MIDI controller and for putting together such a fine party. Check the CULT blog for pics and a very interesting interview with Kubiks and Lomax. Thanks also to all that came down to support me - it really makes a difference to see friends dancing in front. Not only is it infectious and draws more people onto the dance floor, it's a huge pleasure for me. I was still feeling jaded from the night before but in high spirits for this weeks show. It features a few tracks off a new digital album from Spearhead records called 'Moodswings'. It is one of the best digital various artist LP's I have heard in a while and I highly recommend it for DJ's and non. DS123: 3 sharp keys

I've listened to this live recording I made on Sunday morning a few times now and am really pleased with it. I decided this week to air it instead of performing and recording the set during the show. Here's why I like it - I tried to concentrate on the phrase timings and key change undulations that add to the feeling of flow and progression. It is in a key signature range of 3 to 5 sharps with single +/- # note step changes (C#m, G#m and F#m). Another strange but quite interesting feature is that for the crescendo of the mix at about 26+ mins in, the key goes up a fifth to G#m (5 sharps!) (for Drum Origins - Hypercomplex, who's natural key is Gm without realtime time-stretching)) Anyway, technical stuff aside, it seems to work for me...hope you enjoy too :) Big up all the below beatsmiths!
